Hammer & Nail Dispute: Practicing the Arbitration Process

As an intern for the Kline School of Law at Drexel University, I designed and developed an interactive arbitration exercise for an online course on alternative dispute resolution. The activity included video scenarios created using Vyond video animation software, partnered with group discussions and self-reflection activities in Blackboard. The animated scenes were used to create an interactive video on the Kaltura streaming platform.*  I adapted this exercise from a face-to-face classroom exercise provided in Alternative Dispute Resolution by Garvey and Craver (2021).

*Drexel University’s streaming service is restricted to staff and students. In this example, I have linked the scenes using Storyline 360 to simulate the navigation of the interactive video.

Target Audience

Human resource professionals enrolled in the Drexel University, Kline School of Law's online, master's degrees and certificate programs.

Instructional Strategies

Over the course of a two-week period, students assume the role of arbitrator and must review the details, or "discovery,” of a home improvement contract dispute case and make an award decision.

Week 1: Students watch animated video scenarios streamed on the Kaltura interactive video platform. They must examine important documents, review background information on the dispute, and listen to interviews with the claimant and respondent.

Week 2: Through Blackboard, students work in groups of three to discuss the case and determine what rewards the students will grant to the claimant and/or respondent. After the group comes to an agreement and submits their final ruling, students answer several reflection questions on their own and engage with the instructor and full class to share their group rulings and experience as arbitrators.
